Why does NAT use the same address with overload when there's sitll addresses in range available?

I have the following configuration for NAT with overload..

<p>ip nat pool school 198.168.202.1

198.168.203.254 netmask 255.255.254.0

<p>ip nat inside source list 1 pool school overload

<p>Why would the "overload" statement cause PAT to occur when there's still plenty of addresses in the pool still available? For example, the range has approximately 500 addresses for NAT, but PAT occurs even though there are only 200 or so translations in the table.

This is the expected behaviour. This is what the overload parameter does. You can have either PAT or NAT, not both for the same pool. Try this link:
