Why Does the Switch Report Out-discards on WS-X6248 Module and Not the WS-X6348 Module?
On a Catalyst 6000, copying large (200 MB) files from the server on Gigabit Ethernet to a workstation on a 6248 card (100 MB/full duplex) causes a large number of out-discards to appear against the 6248 port.
The same copy operation to a workstation on a 6348 card causes no out-discards.

It is possible that the 100 MB port may need to start buffering packets since the input rate from the Gigabit-connected server exceeds 100 MB. The WS-X6248 module only has 64 KB of port memory while the WS-X6348 has 128 KB of port memory.
Try turning on advanced flowcontrol for additional buffer management between the per port buffer and a shared buffer on the line card, as follows:
set option flowcontrol enable
This command is only available in CatOS 5.3.5 or higher and the command must be typed completely. This command is only supported for 100 Megabit, Full-Duplex connections.
After enabling the command, note the number of out-discards. The rate of out-discards should be considerably less.
