Can anyone tell why BVI (bridged virtual interface) is not necessary when configuring RBE (routed bridged encapsulation)? Is BVI only used with IRB? Any response is appreciated. Thanks!

Take a look at this link, which explains that you do not need to define bridge groups or BVI interfaces because the subinterfaces are treated as routed interfaces.

When you are using IRB, you have diferent interfaces asociated to a bridge group. you can have, subinterfaces ATM, Framerelay, and EThernet into the same bridge group and all interfaces are a Big LAN.
When you use RBE, you only can have one subinterface interface with only one PVC. and you configure the Ip add. in the subinterface.
if you want to have more interfaces running RBE, but in the same lan, you can configure ip unnumbered loopback. in the subinterface that is running RBE.
