Hi

I use for accesslist

192.168.10.0 0.0.0.255

in here 254 host are use.its ok.

but if i use 192.168.10.1 0.0.0.255 ?it is ok or not.

192.168.10.8 0.0.0.3 {I know in here 8 is network address and permit/deny 9-10 are host address.)

but If I use 192.168.10.9 0.0.0.3 then it is right ?.

My Question is

192.168.10.8 0.0.0.3

192.168.10.9 0.0.0.3

which is right or both is right ?

Thanks

Biplob

Hi,

The 192.168.10.8 0.0.0.3 form is correct. When you have the wildcard bits set in an address, the corresponding host bits need not be set. With 192.168.10.9, the last octet is 00001001. However, the wildcard for the last octet is 00000011, which means that the last two bits of the fourth octet are irrelevant.

If you enter the ACL with 192.168.10.9 0.0.0.3, the router will accept and it automatically convert it to 192.168.10.8 0.0.0.3. So either form would work but it's better to get it right yourself.

Hope that helps - pls rate the post if it does.

In access list, the address part always refers to the network address, while the wild card mask indicates network size. So 192.168.10.8 0.0.0.3 is always correct, while 192.168.10.9 0.0.0.3 may not work in some IOS releases, since 192.168.10.9 can only be a host address.

Hope this helps.
