The 6548 is Fabric-Enabled; that is it connects to both the Fabric Bus and the original 32Mbps Bus. The 6148 is NOT fabric-enabled and only connects to the 32Mbps Bus. The Fabric Bus only comes into play with a 65xx chassis, a Supervisor2 and a SFM (or SFM2). Also the 6148 can be upgraded with a daughtercard to support Line-Powered IP-Phones, the 6548 cannot.
