Y2K Problem/Bug?

Hello,

I started this year useing an old catalyst switch

(WS-C2916M-XL) and i never used any hardware with

IOS before. Its a "4 MB" Switch so i useded as the

Manual say to the (all most final) Version that is

available for this switch: 11.2(8.11)SA6

After the ios update i saw by use of command

> dir flash: < that the date is not correctly.

Switch>sh ver

Shouldnt that be 1986- >> 2003 <<?

Switch>sh clock

*00:31:49.199 UTC Mon Mar 8 1993

The switch was a long time not running (without

power). Now my question is whether there is

maybe a type of bios battary for example that is

empty? Can this wrong clock setting be the reson

that it lead to show wrong dates in "sh ver" details?

Thanks for help :)

Re: Y2K Problem/Bug?

Try changing the clock to a new date and time seeting and see if that makes any difference.

switch# clock set hh:mm:ss 24 march 2006

let us know if that changes it or its an IOS compilation issue.

Stil show´s -1903 ... it dont distrub me much (if all other

things working correctly) but that simple confuse me a bit.

The timestap for the (image)files stil show the old date too.

(Maybe it will only be updated if i remove them and then re-

install the image and the other files again on the flash?)

Directory of flash:

2 drwx 10816 Mar 28 1993 03:00:05 html

5 -rwx 107 Mar 28 1993 02:57:03 info

6 -rwx 1119215 Mar 28 1993 02:58:15 c2900XL-hs-mz-112.8.11-SA6.bin

177 -rwx 1120 Mar 11 1993 14:12:53 config.text

178 -rwx 600 Mar 11 1993 18:22:08 vlan.dat

Best regards :)

Re: Y2K Problem/Bug?

Hi,

I feel like the copyright date is listed wrong in the IOS and it was complied as it is. It will not cause any problem in you switch operation, that's for sure :-)

As per your directory of flash goes, yes this are the old files. The moment you put new file that date will be updated to the new one.

HTH, Please rate if it does.

Re: Y2K Problem/Bug?

That looks true (with the timestamp) :-)

Switch#copy flash:config.text flash:test.text

Source filename [config.text]?

Destination filename [test.text]?

1120 bytes copied in 0.58 secs

Switch#dir flash:

Directory of flash:

178 -rwx 600 Mar 11 1993 18:22:08 vlan.dat

179 -rwx 1120 Mar 24 2006 08:04:35 test.text

I only ask my self what happen if there are some power

problems and/or i have to reset the switch. Is there

something like a battary in use for the system time?

I guess to fix this a solution can be to let the switch

connect to ntp server for time/date sync!?

Rateings will be done - thanks for the information about that :)

Re: Y2K Problem/Bug?

I wouldn't worry about , you can set the time with the "clock set " command but the first time it reloads it will go back to a default of like 1993 for the time , does not hold the time over a reload.

Re: Y2K Problem/Bug?

Hello,

I just want to let everyone out there know, that the same (wrong date for cisco copyrights) is shown on the latest version 11.2(8.12)SA6 too.

I can live with that fine but maybe somebody from the nice cisco people will correct this if/when a newer (4 Meg Switch) IOS Version will be Released.
