2600 router: easy vpn server not so easy...

Cisco 2651XM router

IOS image: c2600-advsecurityk9-mz.124-9.T1.bin 17776 KB

I've used the Easy VPN Server wizard in SDM to try to set up my router as a vpn server but I'm struggling to get a connection from the client computer. The client is on a different broadband connection and is windows XP Pro, I used the 'add new connection' wizard in windows XP to set up the client connection. On the client I have disabled the firewall and from it I can ping the ip address where the cisco router/vpn server is and I get four replies so that's fine, and my modem has a port set up ( port 1723) to forward to the ip address of the 2600 router, which is

The client keeps failing to connect, but I must concede I'm not sure what I should be entering in the client connection when it asks for username and password. And I'm not sure I set the vpn server up properly either but I'm a newbie to this. My LAN (at the vpn server end) is on and is connected to the Fastethernet0/0 port (, and my modem (on is connected to Fastethernet0/1 which is From the 2600 router location I can surf the internet fine so theres no connection problem there. Attached is the running config of my router: and thanks for any help.

Re: 2600 router: easy vpn server not so easy...

First of all, you need to use a Cisco VPN client software on the PC. The Mircrosoft VPN client is a L2TP/IPSEC client or a PPTP client, not pure ISPEC.

Re: 2600 router: easy vpn server not so easy...

thanks for your response Daniel. I did install Cisco vpn client 4.6 some time after my original post but I still can't get a connection to the server. I also set up the vpn server as per the instructions at the url you gave but I'm having no joy. The client machine fails to connect with message 'no TCP response' and if I do a vpn client test from the server end the vpn tunnel shows as down. What does that mean? If you have any further thoughts (based on the config in my earlier post) I'd be grateful for them.
