501 or 506?

A customer of mine is setting up an additional internet connection. That line (ADSL-3Mb/768kb) will only be used by a few people but it's some type of a firewall. I can get a PIX501E for under $400 bucks. A 506E is alsmot $900. Is it really worth the extra $500 for what I'm doing? Their main firewall is a 515E with 3FE ports. Ideally, I'd want the DSL line to be a backup route to the internet without having them spend too much $$$. What are my options?

Thanks!

Re: 501 or 506?

Without knowing more specifics about your requirments, it sounds like you could get away with a 501 (depending on what you mean by when you say few).

Here are the data sheets for both the 501 and 506

Cisco PIX 501 Security Appliance

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/vpndevc/ps2030/products_data_sheet09186a0080091b18.html

Cisco PIX 506 Security Appliance

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/vpndevc/ps2030/products_data_sheet09186a0080091b13.html

One thing I hate about the 501 is that there is no DMZ interface (on the 506 you can trunk for a DMZ). Also, you can't load Pix v7 on a 501.

Hope that helps! If so, please rate.

Thanks

Re: 501 or 506?

Thansk for the info. I didn't think you could load v7 on the 506. I'd like to know more about creating DMZ on a 506 with two interfaces.

Re: 501 or 506?

Hello ph0enix,

Actually you are correct. The PIX Security appliance Version 7.0 software runs on the PIX 515/515E, PIX 525, and PIX 535 platforms. PIX Security appliance Version 7.0 is not currently supported on PIX 501 or PIX 506/506E hardware.

Here is a link that describes how you can create a DMZ with 2 physical interfaces (the DMZ will be a virtual interface)

Using VLANs with the Firewall
