HI

can we use ASA5500 (HA mode)device as border device (inplace of router?). Does it has capability to run routing protocol like BGP? So that it can make peering with ISP links for redundency?

thanks

ASA and PIX are not routers. They will run OSPF and RIP only and even then is limited compared to IOS.However in v7.2 there is a feature called "Standby ISP Support" where it uses one default route but can detect if that fails (by pinging a specified IP address at the ISP end) and switch to the standby ISP.

See http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/iaabu/pix/pix_sw/v_72/rel_note/pixrn72.htm#wp186059

Alternatively, if you want BGP, run that on the internet routers and use HSRP or OSPF between the routers and the ASA/PIXs.

The asa does not support bgp. The only routing protocols it supports are ospf and rip.

If you need a router your better of buying a router.

Thanks,
