Can i configure my Cisco IDS to block email addresses based on certain criteria. How cna I use my IDS to stop getting virus emails. We have the latest MS patch on all computer, but still 100's of virus emails are coming in evryday. If not the IDS, cna I use to PIX 6.2 to this purpose.
Using an IDS system to try and block email messages is a bad idea in general. It is much better to install anti-virus software on your email gateways. The basic problems are that viruses tend to mutate often making it hard to keep signatures on the IDS up-to-date, and SMTP servers will often attempt to resend failed messages. So potentially, if the IDS is oversubscribed, it might miss a mail message letting a virus into the network. Given that, it should be possible to write a custom signature for a virus.
