All,
Is the bootp server service required for either:
pppoe accounts that get an ip from the provider
OR
using the router as a dhcp server?
If not, what's it used for and is it pretty much always safe to disable it?

bootp was a precursor to the dhcp protocol, please have a look at this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bootstrap_Protocol
You should disable it on your router as a security best practice.

All throughout this article, it discusses how bootp is used to assign a client an IP address. My OP was just this question. Do I need to leave it enabled to get an address from an ISP, or do I need to leave it if I'm running a DHCP server on my router?
