can the antivirus application detect the password protected file?

hello

if i have an antivirus application or antivirus gateway, can it detect the viruses that embeded in a file (such as excel sheet file) that is protected by a password?

and a second question please,

can the antivirus application detect a virus in a compressed file like zipped or winrar file?

Makar,

Generally password-protected files are encrypted and the contents cannot be analyzed, therefore the answer to the first question is no. For the second question, depends on the AV vendor but most of the big names can scan the zipped files too.
