Having unsuccessfully tried to create a custom signature, in order to trigger an alarm when documents with the word 'confidential' are sent via mail, I wonder if anyone could point me in the right direction please?
I tried the string.tcp, atomic.tcp and service.smtp engines with different settings but failed miserably.
I'm afraid this is one area for which we are currently unable to provide a signature. The problem is that most documents attached to email messages are base64 mime-encoded, so they are not actually trasmitted in their native format. We currently do not have the capability to decode these documents, so it would be impossible for us to match on arbitrary text strings inside the documents. This could explain why your attempts to create a custom signature have failed. For now, your mail servers are probably the best place to inspect documents for keywords.
