FWSM and 305006

I am running a FWSM with several static 1:1 NATs. The statics cannot go outbound due to FWSM-3-305006. I have read both of the Cisco docs, and find either my understanding or them lacking. For instance, if I take 10.1.1.1 and translate to 172.16.1.1 it cannot reach anything. However, if I translate to a PAT, it works fine reaching the same services. Or, oddly, if I translate using a policy NAT from/to the static addresses all is well. I guess I am missing the workaround presented in the docs, and honestly would just love to disable this "feature." I have a class A of internal addresses broken out and translating to a Class C of public. Is the workaround obvious and I am just missing it? Thoughts are definetly appreciated.
