Hello,
I have a CAT 6509 that has an IDSM-1 card in it. I know absolutely nothing about it, and would like to get it up and going. I don't have VMS or IDS Director, but have heard that there's a Device Manager for it.
Could someone provide some guidance on how to get started with IDS when you have just the IDSM-1 blade and that's it. If it proves useful, we'll look at getting the supporting software.
Thanks,
Dave

This should be a good doc to get you started,

The IDSM1 requires either CSPM, Unix Director, or VMS for configuration and monitoring.
The newer IDSM2 has the built in IDS Device Manager for configuration, or VMS can be used.
SO if you have the original IDSM-1 you will need to purchase a management application or talk to your Cisco Representative about upgrading to the newer IDSM2.

I have an IDSM-1, and from my experience you don't 'need' to use CSPM, DIRECOR or VMS. Another option (free) would be IEV version 3 and you can always session to the IDSM form the 6509 to configure through CLI.

Hi,
Thanks. Where can I find IEV v3?
Thanks,
Dave

IEV version 3.x can be used for viewing alarms for the IDSM1, but the CLI available from the session command only allows you the limited configuration of setting up communication parameters (hostname, ip address, etc.. in the setup command).
You really need CSPM, Unix Director, or VMS to do any configuration beyond initial setup. And if you are already purchasing one of these, then you might as well use it for monitoring as well.
IEV 3.x is available from the main IDS downloads page:
