Can anybody explain the difference between GRE and PPTP. Does PPTP use GRE or are they seperate. Do I need to open TCP port 47 for PPTP to work.

PPTP use a tcp connection to control the tunnel (including negociation) and use GRE to encapsulate the data traffic
