Is My LAN secure....

Hi ,

Hope this mail finds you all in good health.

First of all I would like to ask if It is safe to have a server , say a Mail server to which I have mapped a live IP on the LAN. ie , I have a mail server with a live IP , in the Pix 515 I have configured it to map to a local IP so that it the mail server is accessible throught internet and only port Smpt is enabled on the IP is that safe enough.

At times I have been able to access the server from outside by giving a \\ and live ip address of the mail server .

that does not sound safe . So how can I make a server on my Internal network safe and secure.

I do not have a DMZ on the firewall.

Please do give me some inputs.

thanx in advance

best bet is to have a DMZ

Re: Is My LAN secure....

Doesn't sound like you have applied any access-lists or conduits properly on the PIX. I'd make sure you don't have an 'ip permit any any' in there anywhere.

I would agree that it is wise to have internet available servers located on the dmz...but it should be safe internally if you have taken measures to protect that host as well.
