Memory on the 1721 router and VPN

I have a router that I want to set up VPN connections to from clients. I have found that the IOS I need requires 48MB of Memory and 16MB flash. Thing is that the 1700's only have one slot and I already have a 32MB installed. I read somewhere that the 1700's have 16MB on board memory that somehow makes up the difference for 48MB total required.

Can someone tell me if this is correct and possibly explain this to me? I need to know if I can safely load the IOS on our production router?

Yes the 1700's do have 16 Mb onboard memory. So with your 32 Mb stick and the onboard you have 48 Mb total.
