Number of VPN Peers

Are there any advices limiting the number of vpn peers supported by a cisco 3660 router?

Or is the answer <it depends on ...>

... the bandwidth of the interface terminating the vpn peers

... the amount of DRAM

... the use of a harware encryption module???

Are there any pros to use a vpn concentrator instead of the 3660 router?

Thanks in advance

Edgar

Re: Number of VPN Peers

The answer is very much 'it depends' on all these thing plus the amount of traffic which is expected.

Using a VPN concentrator would be easier to configure as it has the web interface specifically for VPN but, using the router, you would get more flexibility, other IOS features etc.

Re: Number of VPN Peers

Can't answer on the 3600 series. We were running about 15 VPN connections through a 2621 (SDSL link) at one point as a proof of concept test. We have since moved to a 7206VXR (50+ connections).

The 2621 had 64MB ram and a VPN-Basic encryption module. When we first started our proof of concept, we would run about 90% utilization on the router. We got it down to around 20% normal, 70%+ at peak.
