PDM is there a user guide - to configure PIX501

Trying to configure the pix501, using the web front end-

I have searched the site for any user guides- but am failing badly.

The getting started booklet is a little thin on information.

Can you help?

You can use the help feature on PDM itself. It is quite extensive.

Re: PDM is there a user guide - to configure PIX501

Thanks for that.I have been using the help quite a lot but I do not have any knowledge on pix firewalls.

The help assumes some previous knowledge.

What I was hoping to find was something like

1) first set your External IP by xxx

2) set your internal ip by xxxx

3) set your route to xxxx

4) set a al by xxxx

etc - seen any good reference's for idiots like the above.

Thanks

Re: PDM is there a user guide - to configure PIX501

Here is a sample quick config to get your PCs out to the Internet. This is using PAT not NAT. Call Cisco TAC for more detailed help. You get 90 days of support with the Pix.

Do a write erase and reload to get rid of what you have now.

192.168.1.1=Pix inside address ip (def gateway for all your internal PCs)

10.0.0.2=your 1 routeable IP address

10.0.0.1=your internet router

From telnet/console go into priv exec mode (type enable)

type config t

ip add inside 192.168.1.1

ip add outside 10.0.0.2

nat 1 0 0

global (outside) 1 10.0.0.2 interface

route 0 0 10.0.0.1

write mem

Thanks for that.

I had not relised that you get 90 days support.

The cisco support number refused to help at all, saying I need to buy a support pack.

I'll try again!

Re: PDM is there a user guide - to configure PIX501

Thanks for the above.

Tried it on the PIX501 Most of it works ok but it did not like the global line , but with that and the two pages in the quick config guide we can now serf the web no problem.

Do you have a sample config to allow smtp mail to gain access to the mail server inside.

I think it will be something like the following

PAT 62.8.127.90(outside ip) 25 192.168.13.254 (inside mail server)

then an AL to allow my isp range to access that port?

Thanks Richard

Re: PDM is there a user guide - to configure PIX501

For a connection to be initiated from the outside you need a permit statement applied to outside interface.

access-list name permit tcp any host A.B.C.D eq smtp

access-group name in interface outside

The address(A.B.C.D) is the gateway of the outside interface of the firewall.
