Access list blocks echo-requests, but permits our own echo-replies and traceroutes to enter. This reduces the impact of a Ping of Death attack. Switches operate at layer 2 and 'ping of death' is causing problem at layer 3 => no switch can go down with the 'ping of death'. IOS does not fear the 'ping of death'.
