PIX configuration

Hi.

We have a PIX 520 and needed to implement a VPN with 3DES encryption, but the activation key is for DES, for 3DES we contacted to our supplier and says that ours firewall is outside maintenance and that the option is to buy another one pix firewall, is this true?, I cannot make an upgrade to 3DES in my pix 520?

Hi,

Actually you should be able to buy the 3DES upgrade contract and then email licensing@cisco.com with your show version and your Contract number and they should be able to provide you with a 3DES activation key at that time.

We have recently bought 3des licenses for our PIX520 without problem.

But if you plan to use Pix ver above 5.1(5), you need additional 16Mb flash.

If you have an old PIX520 there is only 2MB, but the newer already have 16Mb.

The new VPN client connectivety is from ver 6.0.

Your supplier must want to sell you another PIX. I would call Cisco directly and find out what you can do before agreeing to buy another firewall. Typically, if you have enough flash and ram to support the new IOS on the PIX then all you need to do is call Cisco and buy the key to upgrade to 3DES.
