PIX for VPN or VPN Appliance

We have a Cisco Pix firewall and we also need to setup a VPN for remote access for both employees and clients.

How do you determine whether it is better to use the PIX we have for the VPN or purchase a seperate piece of hardware like the VPN 3000?

I’d step back and try to determine future needs. The lower cost solution would be to obviously upgrade your PIX to terminate the VPNs but you’ll lose performance if you have the PIX working too hard. The VPN 3000 is a good solution because it can handle numerous more simultaneous sessions and is made for encryption. If you have a large number of remote users or plan to in the future I’d suggest going with the 3000. You might also want to consider using your PIX as an interim solution and migrate to the VPN 3000 as your needs grow.
