PPPoE on ASA 5520?

mx

My pix 506e got hit by lightning last night (and now I cant get ethernet0 to be up/up, just up/down) so I replace it with an ASA.

And the ASA wont do pppoe? Is that for real?

I read this thread:

http://forum.cisco.com/eforum/servlet/NetProf?page=netprof&forum=Security&topic=Firewalling&CommCmd=MB%3Fcmd%3Dpass_through%26location%3Doutline%40%5E1%40%40.1ddba1c9

but it wasnt entirely clear. When I enter the vpdn command on my ASA like I would on the pix I get an error msg that says its an unsupported command.

How can a pix support it but its replacement not? Am I just missing something? (likely) ;-)

thanks for any help

Bob

Hi Bob,

With Pix v7.0(x) or higher, there are few features no longer supported:

?PPPoE

?L2TP over IPSec

?PPTP

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/products/ps6120/prod_release_note09186a008058cb4d.html#wp209006

So far, I have not seen any reason or alternate options/features for the above.

Rgds,

AK

Wow, thats just amazing. Tough to imagine why anyone would want a firewall with those features huh? Thank you for the link (and the bad news) ;-) Time to return it and get a $40 linksys.

Bob

Hi,

Thats true that 7.0 doesnt support PPPoE, however 7.2(1) does support PPPoE. So I would suggest upgrading.

In regards to configuring it (if you didnt know), check out http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6120/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a008066ebe6.html

Good luck.

Glen

Glen, thank you a ton! That just might save my life :)

I just went to the download section (my login does allow me to download) but I couldnt even find the darn software for ASA. That will probably take me longer than the upgrade :)

thank you!

bob

Found it! Thanks guys, I appreciate it. Ill post here the outcome of PPPoE once I get it running.

Bob,

PPPoE is not supported when failover is configured on the security appliance, or in multiple context or transparent mode. PPPoE is only supported in single, routed mode, without failover.

For ASA 7.2 configuration guide for VPN and PPPoE:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6120/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a008066ebe6.html

I hope this helps.
