I am working at a branch office of an organization and need to support PPTP (for use through NAT). The branch office is using a WebBeetle (which allows a single dialup connection to be shared on an ethernet network). The product only allows permitting or denying ports numbers, not protocol types. Is there any way to get PPTP to work without using a different dialup product? Thanks in advance.
No. PPTP wont work in a Port translated environment. You need individual IPs for each host connecting so IP Protocol 47 is recognized. Port translation only works with most tcp/udp applications with some exceptions. The only alternative I know of is using a concentrator with vpn client in nat transparency mode using IPSEC. Check out Ciscos vpn concentrators www.cisco.com/go/vpn3000. IPSEC is far more secure than PPTP anyway. Even Microsoft is moving away from PPTP.
