Hi, looking at getting CISCO PIX 501 firewall, and researching it vs others. What I am trying to find out is: will NAT be a suitable substitution for a Proxy server? Also, since I have to learn and manage everything myself, how difficult is it to learn PIX or are there other resources I have to consult before I can configure the router? I have a minimal amount of CISCO exposure.

The PIX is a much faster and a far more reliable solution than a proxy server. The thing is pretty simple to setup but the Cisco TAC is excellent and will help you configure things after you follow the basics in the manual.
