Keys come in pairs: the public key is known to everyone, and the private or secret key is known only to a single person. If you encrypt a message with a public key, only the holder of the private key can decrypt. Or if you sign a message with you private key, the recipent can verify its authenticity by decrypting the signature with the public key.
