I'm using a cisco 3640 with a 3-DES encryption module as my VPN gateway for my branch to branch VPNs. I'm thinking of mitigating the risk to business due to this box being a single point of failure.
I had plans to buy another 3640 with encryption module to be configured as a hot standby for this VPN box. The boxes would be configured with HSRP and the virtual address of the public interfaces group would be used in branch VPN boxes as their peer box address. But i understand that the 3640 series is reaching end of sale and the new version 3640a.
Does 3640a work flawlessly with older 3640 when configured for HSRP?
Is there a better product from Cisco which would be an effective VPN gateway ?
Can a different product range like 7200 work with the current 3640 VPN box in a hot standby mode?
HSRP should work fine between different products like 3640 and 7200. It's not a product specific feature. So you should not have any problems in configuring VPNs and HSRP between different Cisco products
