SDM showing firewall status: inactive

even though I have a bunch of inspection rules applied to the outside interface and I can see that the number of denied attempts by the firewall under logging is going up? Is SDM bogus?

In case it's not clear. I have a IOS firewall running on a 2651xm (IOS 12.4.9T)

Not to rush you guys but this is driving me nuts. The only thing I changed in the config since the FW was setup using SDM is unintuitive descriptions for each interface - could this be why SDM isn't seeing the firewall anymore?
