I am going to be installing an MS small business server 2003 running exchange as well as file/print services with the below topology. I am concerned with operating a public email server within a private network without a DMZ.
Can someone please address my concern and provide recommendations to secure the below topology via the cisco 1711. Maybe I could implement a DMZ with dual NICS in the SBServer internal and external? Would that even be effective? It is assumed that I will be patching the server and workstations as well as running antivirus on the server and clients.
I disagree Nadeem, dual NIC's can be used as another level of security. You can filter on the internal and external NIC at the server to only allow ports, protos, addresses in/out. If the server gets compromised (less administrative priviledges) then you can at least make it harder to get to the internal network.
