VPN activation slows network drastically, why?

We have a DSL line connected througy a Cisco 800 series router. The connection is very fast until the checkpoint client software is activated to access a checkpoint firewall vpn in the corporate office. This slows down the connection drastically. What in the VPN could cause this? I just want to get an idea where to start troubleshooting?

Re: VPN activation slows network drastically, why?

VPN overhead is high. It takes a lot of work to encrypt and decrypt packets and the packet size itself is large. Also, when you connect to the remote end point, they might be applying restrictions. Probably worth a call to checkpoint to see if they have any tweaks for you.

The 800 series will only process approx. 384kbps with DSL in VPN mode.
