Whenever I connect to the VPN via the VPN client, I can no longer see my local LAN. The VPN is configured for split tunneling so I can get the remote network's resources and the Internet, but no local LAN resources.

I would suggest that you check the setup of your VPN client. Assuming that you are using the Cisco IPSec VPN client, start the VPN client, select the profile that you use, click the modify icon. In the window that opens up click the transport tab. Then look near the bottom of the window. There is a check box for Allow Local LAN Access. Probably it is not checked. Check it, click to save the setting change, and try your connection. It should now allow you access to local LAN resources while you are connected to the VPN.
