VPN Client: "Connection Manager Failed to Respond"

Hi, I have a frustrating problem with one particular Compaq laptop (Compaq EVO 600c, Win2K SP3). When the Cisco VPN Client is used over a dial-up interface, the application returns a "Connection Manager failed to respond" error after approx 2 minutes. It works fine over a LAN connection.

I have seen one message in the forums that mentions this, but infortunately it has not helped. I have reinstalled the network/modem adapters, all networking components, and the VPN client (3.6) all to no avail. I have also searched internet for any issues concerning Connection manager failures.

In the release notes for 3.6 it mentions:

VPN Client Cannot Launch Microsoft Connection Manager The VPN Client does not see a dialup connection made with Microsoft Connection Manager because of incompatibilities between the requirements of the two applications (CSCdx85663). -- however I cannot get access to the bug tool on line - it tells me I dont have access (even though I am registered??). If anyone can send me the contents of CSCdx85663 I'd be immensely happy.

Out of interest, a second user with a Compaq (Win2k also) works perfectly fine, so I presume it is not the way I am installing/setting up. Any help or pointers anyone can provide would be gladly received - I am nearly at the point of formatting the disk and reinstalling the operating system.

Hi,

We got the same exact message error also. I would like to know if how to solve this issue also. Already opened a case with TAC, but no helpfull answer.

By the way, the contents of CSCdx85663 is as follow:

Release-note :

The dialup connection made with MS connection manager 1.2 is not seen by the vpn client 3.5.2A

This is seen on windows 2000 and XP

Well, I'm kinda glad that it's not just me ;o)

Here is some more info I have found this morning. This is a trace from the IPSec Log Viewer - network disconneted, dialed into local ISP via modem, see comments at each stage (I've removed IP addresses purposely).

---Now it seems to make sense, the server returned to me allowing the connection to continue (from the previous dial-up VPN attempt). So, it appears that on dial-up a message is being sent TO the VPN server, but it cannot RETURN to me. When I disconnected and switched back to the LAN (which has internet access also) it could then get messages to me, thus allowing the process to continue.

Doesn't really solve the case, but it at least shows what is happening. Anyone got ideas as to why?

engel - have you heard anything back from TAC?

Can anyone else comment or provide assistance please? Would really appreciate some form of help.

Any resolution on this yet. I have a similar problem on Comcast broadband connection. I can get a successfull connect with my Win2k laptop, but when plugging my XP Pro desktop into the same port with same cable, and same config I get: System Error: connection Manager failed to respond, and the log shows only:

I have not received any solution from our netwrok person, and cannot find a solution here. I uninstalled, reinstalled, and reconfigured several times.
