VPN issue with cable modem

I work from Australia for a US based company and I connect via VPN into my company network. I have recently put in a cable modem at home. It fails to obtain an IP address when the VPN is operating. This seems to be because the cable traffic is being blocked by the VPN. Telstra(ISP) is telling me that the VPN needs to be configured to allow the cable modem traffic. How can I configure VPN to do so?
