I have an IOS router (1710) that needs to get its Wan IP address from the ISP via DHCP. Since I do not know what IP address I am going to get, how do I define the default route?
I have tried:
ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 eth0 but I am never able to ping the second hop in my lab environment. If I add the default route with the next hop IP address to the 1710 (since I built the Lab I know the gateway), then all works.
I had a similar problem with dhcp assigned IP's. As far as I know, ip address dhcp is for ethernet interfaces and ip address negotiated is a ppp commaned for serial interfaces, it's not available under ethernet interfaces. The default router ip address should not change, only the customer IP in the lease, you could call the ISP and ask them what the default router is for that DHCP lease and just specify that IP as your default route next hop. I have done that before and it worked for me.
