What is happening with the global command?

Hi

I've inherited some 515e (6.2(2)) firewalls. Currently they have this section in them:

global (outside) 1 xxx.xxx.17.3

global (dmz) 1 xxx.xxx.17.19

Could someone please explain what the above is doing?
