The Cybersecurity Specialist is designed around a security analyst's duties - typically someone who might work is a Security operations center.

They have changed the prerequisite requirements. There is no longer any prerequisite. You may be looking at an old version of that page. I just called it up and it clearly states:

Announcement
The prerequisites for the Cisco Cybersecurity Specialist certification have changed. There are no mandatory prerequisites required to attain this certification.

No Cisco certification requires you take an instructor led training class. However, many have such training available to assist the learner in their path towards certification or just to increase their knowledge level and understanding.

All proctored exams do require you go to a PearsonVUE center in your area. By using proctored exams, Cisco protects the value and validity of the certification process.

You're welcome.

The Cybersecurity Specialist cert is brand new for 2014 so there's not much out there on it. It remains to be seen if this is given much value by the professional community and employers. Typically the specialist certifications are useful primarily for your current job duties vs. being a good all around preparation for or development of a career path.

You will generally find the learningnetwork.cisco.com discussion pages much more useful for this sort of question. Folks here are more focused on solving speific problems.

There are many other specializations within the field, both Cisco and non-Cisco. Outside the CCNA/NP/IE track there are things designed primarily for the partner community such as the Field engineer certification for products like ISE, certification in the products formerly know as Sourcefire etc. There's also the recently added Cisco Cybersecurity specialist although I've not seen many people pick up on this one yet. In the non-Cisco realm there are things like CISSP and CEH.

Which are useful to you are determined by factors such as your employer's needs and your goals for career progression. Also, certification without experience is of very limited value - more so as you progress into the higher levels.

ok so after looking at cisco cybersecurity specialist i see the prereqs are ccna and ccna security.

and the recommended training is a different course?

however is it only at these locations IN PERSON? cuz that is definitely not going to work if thats the only way i can take the class and or learn.. -_-

i will direct my questions there, but a long time before im even ready for that test :)

if you had to put these certifications in order of hierarchy what would they be? in terms of what comes before the other?

ccent/ccna, ccna sec, ccnp sec, ccie sec, cissp, ccss

net+/sec+/CEH

My suggested order would be ccent/ccna, ccna sec. Follow that with experience. For my part, any certification beyond that without experience are only as good as the paper they are printed on.

If you have the experience, the CCNP Security is a good step. CCIE Security I would not give much value unless the person also had 10+ years experience. In my opinion they would otherwise be (in most cases - not all) just a "paper CCIE". (passed the test but don't have the practical experience to make the certification realize its full value)

CISSP and CEH are just ancillary if you are looking to have a broader exposure as a general security specilist vs. a Cisco certified engineer.

Hope this helps. Thanks for the ratings.
