Windows 2000 dropping connection

I have a problem with Windows 2000 machines connected to a 3005 concentrator. When I connect I can ping internal network addresses by name and number. In a minute or two I am no longer able to ping and get a timed out message. Sometimes I can keep pinging and connecting for over an hour. I'm coming through an SMC cable router to the Windows 2000 computer. Any suggestions??
