Is it at all possible to downgrade from IOS back to VxWorks?

No. The upgrade is irreversible.

This may seem like a stupid question, but why exactly is the upgrade irreversible? What's changed that can't be changed back?

During the upgrade from VxWorks to IOS the VxWorks bootloader is overwritten and there is no downgrade procedure to reinstall the VxWorks bootloader, therefore the upgrade is irreversible. Just curious as to why someone would want to go back to vxworks.
I've been waiting for years for Cisco to get rid of that bug ridden os. Now granted there are a few in the IOS that I have come across, but no where near as many as before.
