how to load the controller-based "RCV" IOS into the AP and boot this IOS

1.  Download the RCV IOS from the Cisco website.  Make sure the IOS has a file extension of TAR.

2.  Copy the RCV IOS into the AP using the command "archive download-sw tftp:///IOS.tar".

3.  When the process finishes, reload the AP.

Ok, now your AP is running on autonomous IOS.  You now need to load the controller-based "RCV" IOS into the AP and boot this IOS.

Once the switch boots into the RCV IOS, please post the following output:

1.  WLC:  sh sysinfo;

2.  WLC:  sh time;

3.  AP:  sh version;

4.  AP:  sh ip interface brief; and

5.  AP:  sh inventory

Have you restored the image?  If you haven't, then your AP is not going to work.  Have you looked at the deployment guides... there are many out there and depending if your AP is autonomous or if you have a WLC, you can find that info.

Thanks,

Scott

Re: AP 1242-AG

Hi mohammed,

You just connect the AP to your Infrastructure(edge swicth or...). AP will detect the config and image automatically from WLC.

FYI:

The LAPs are "zero touch" deployed, and no individual configuration of LAPs is required.

In order for the WLC to be able to manage the LAP, the LAP should discover the controller and register with the WLC. After the LAP has registered to the WLC, LWAPP messages are exchanged and the AP initiates a firmware download from the WLC (if there is a version mismatch between the AP and WLC). If the AP's onboard firmware is not the same as the WLC's, the AP will download firmware to stay in sync with the WLC. The firmware download mechanism utilizes LWAPP. Then, the WLC provisions the LAP with the configurations that are specific to the WLANs so that the LAP can accept client associations. These WLAN-specific configurations include:

  •     Service set identifier (SSID)
  •     Security parameters
  •     IEEE 802.11 parameters, such as:

  1.         Data rate
  2.         Radio channels
  3.         Power levels

FE0?  You're suppose to assign an IP address to the AP's BVI.

Once you have done this, can the AP ping the management IP address of the WLC?  If it can, enter this command:  capwap ap controller ip address .

Re: AP 1242-AG

Hi fellas,

I have been learning a lot from you guys. I have borrowed 1242 access point to learn more but it has not antenna connected. I have bought antenna 1728 from ebay but do I need more than one antenna to configure?

Re: AP 1242-AG

You can use one, but you loose diversity.  You would have to define your receive and transmit antenna port.

Thanks,

Scott

Re: AP 1242-AG

Can I use two 1728 2.4 ghz ? And be able to configure production Wi-Fi and guest? Do I need to buy 5ghz antenna as well?

IT's up to you on what you need.... indoors, its nice to have diversity, but those antennas are really meant for high ceilings and usually used in warehouses.  Typical dipole antennas is what you would need for office areas.  Would I use the 5ghz also... of course, since many devices also support 5ghz.  Antenna doesn't have anything to do with your SSID's.  That is your configuration... your not going to say that you want production off one antenna and guest off the other.... doesn't work like that.  Antenna should be used depending on the environment the Ap is in and SSID, is your configuration of the AP.  With production and guest, you will need to have a switch that supports trucking.

Thanks,

Scott
