AP Controller IP DHCP Problem

Dear all,

its not my first config or location but with the 2600 I have now a problem.

Any ideas?

*Mar  1 00:17:04.255: %CAPWAP-3-DHCP_RENEW: Could not discover WLC using DHCP IP. Renewing DHCP IP.
*Mar  1 00:17:07.327: %DHCP-6-ADDRESS_ASSIGN: Interface BVI1 assigned DHCP address 10.X.Y.101, mask 255.255.255.0, hostname APc08c.6024.cfc8

Translating "CISCO-CAPWAP-CONTROLLER"...domain server (255.255.255.255)
*Mar  1 00:17:14.255: %CAPWAP-5-DHCP_OPTION_43: Controller address 10.A.B.30 obtained through DHCP

The AP will use the 10.A.B.30 as Controller...when I enter the Controller IP manually it works..

best regards,

Sebastian

In the normal scenario what are the console output after this point ? It says AP got the WLC IP via DHCP option 43. Then it should send join request to this WLC.

*Mar  1 00:17:14.255: %CAPWAP-5-DHCP_OPTION_43: Controller address 10.A.B.30 obtained through DHCP

Rasika

Hi Rasika,

correct I know but any idea why he did it not in my case??...a second also not..

manually he joined..

I never had problems with my DHCP configs in the past and the 1140 e.g. and of course I used the correct vendor code "Cisco AP c2600"

Sebastian

If you do not get any output after that point, it is strainge.

I would check console logging level & make sure it is "debugging"

What is the AP console CLI output of "show capwap client rcb" looks like when it stuck at that point. I would try "clear capwap private-config"  & then reload AP to see it makes any diffrence

HTH

Rasika

there are some more outputs...after the once I posted u will see this here..

*Mar  1 00:16:18.755: %IP-3-DESTHOST: src=10.X.Y.101, dst=0.0.0.0, NULL desthost -Process= "CAPWAP CLIENT", ipl= 0, pid= 76

Tomorrow back in the office I will try your debug command..I tried debug DHCP but see no problems comming in..

its not my first config or location but with the 2600 I have now a problem.

Sebastian,

I presume your WLC is running AT LEAST 7.2.110.0 firmware?

Console into the AP and boot the AP.  I post the entire bootup process.

Can you also provide the following information:

1.  WLC:  sh sysinfo;

2.  WLC:  sh time;

3.  AP:  sh version;

4.  AP:  sh ip int brief; and

5.  AP:  sh inventory

*Mar  1 00:17:14.255: %CAPWAP-5-DHCP_OPTION_43: Controller address 10.A.B.30 obtained through DHCP

The date and time of this log is very suspicious.  It could reveal why when you post the output I've requested.

*Mar 1 00:01:06.255: %CAPWAP-3-ERRORLOG: Could Not resolve CISCO-CAPWAP-CONTROLLER

I presume CISCO-CAPWAP-CONTROLLER is not configured in DNS?  You may want to do this.

Here's the dig ...

1.  WLC Country Code:  Your WLC is configured with a lot of Regulatory Domain.  Because of this, only COMMON CHANNELS will be transmitted by the AP.  So you may want to consider this in the future.

2.  Again, look at the time and date of the logs from the AP.  True, you have NTP configured BUT the AP can't even get the "basic" time and date right.  Which means the AP cannot discover where the WLC is.  So the basic troubleshooting for this would be firewall.    "Make sure that the CAPWAP UDP ports 5246 and 5247 (similar to the LWAPP UDP ports 12222 and 12223) are enabled and are not blocked by an intermediate device that could prevent an access point from joining the controller."

3.  If you console into the AP, can the AP ping the management IP address of the WLC?  If it can, then issue this command "config capwap ap controller ip address ".  If the AP joins when you do this, then it's probably because CISCO-CAPWAP-CONTROLLER is not configured.

NOTE:  There could be a remote possibility that the AP may have been incorrectly loaded with MESH IOS.  But we'll do the basic stuff first before going there.

Not sure if the FPGA for 7.4 on you WLC has anything to do with it but I would update it ; as yours says 1.3 : if I am reading right?

Hey Leo and Reginals,

for is must be something with the AP and the DHCP option I can't see in the moment, because as mentiones as soon as I let him join manually by the command capwap ap controller ip addr....it joins the AP...

I don't want to use DNS, I never used it before so that can't be a problem I guess.

I will try to go ahead with some try and erros maybe i will find somthing small which help us. I let u know as soon as I found something.

regards,
Sebastian

Sebastian,

If you used the command "capwap ap controller ip address" command then this is indicative that your DNS is not configured.

If you don't want to configure DNS, then the only possible way would be to prime your AP before going out.  This means that you need to plug your AP so it will "find" the controller while the switch and/or AP is connected to the same subnet as your WLC.

Once the AP is able to learn where the controller is then you can deploy the AP.

Leo, I'm confuesed does the DHCP option I use today for a few other APseries not work any longer?

In this case I have trouble with it on the 2600.

Sebastian,

You need to configure both DHCP option 43 and DNS.  Both are used to go out and look for the WLC.

OK DNS did also not work..

I have now a 2600 in my office and try it here with another DHCP Server etc...if that work a problem is on-site with the DHCP...

i keep u in the loop...thanks so far
