APs and Multiple Data Rates

When an AP is set for all data rates (1,2,5.5,11), does it drop to the lowest common data rate? In other words, if a client is connected at 2Mb, will the AP drop to 2Mb for *all* clients sessions, or can it adjust to multiple data rates for multiple clients?

Can't find any official doc on this, but field tests show that the lowest common data rate applies for all clients. Does anyone know the 'official' word?? Thanks.........Janet

Janet , this all depends on how you designed your WLAN. If you have users connected at 2MB then this will effect all users on that AP. I recommend allow all unicast traffic be transmitted @ 11mb/s leaving only your multicast traffic transmitted at the other availible datarates.
