Hello,

I have 2 4402 WLC's and am in the process of deploying 1042 APs out to sites. But The AP's wont recognize the WLC. I have configured the DNS for CAPWAP but still no dice. I have had to serial into each unit and give it a static IP and then I can see it on the WLC. Shoulsnt this be automatic? what am I missing?

You had to console in and give the AP a static? If so, then that means the AP isn't getting an ip address on the subnet it is connected to. If you console into the AP while it is being powered up, you can see if the AP gets and ip or not an where the join process fails.

The firmware on the WLC is the latest 7.x. Yes I am not getting an IP address. I am not using the DHCP 43 option but I do have an entry in the DNS for capwap controllers.

1.What is the firmware of your WLC?

2. Console into the WAP and post the entire bootup process.

It now seems to be seeing the DHCP server but still not seeing the WLC. It just keeps cycling through discover, I get the following 3 errors:

Did not get log server settings from DHCP

Could not resolve cisco-capwap-controller.domain.net

could not discover WLC uing DHCP renewing DHCP

are the APs getting the IP address from the DHCP?? if so can u try pinging the WLC management ip address from the AP??

OK I think I got the AP working, it is up with an IP but WCS still dosent see it. Still working this out.

The problem was that The DNS zone needed to be reloaded as it wasn;t resollving the controller IP's So now the DHCP is working properly and the only issue left is that WCS still does not recognize the AP until I manually console into the AP and assign it a primary controller name. Shoul;dn't this be automated?

You mean the AP isn't joining the WLC. Well since your DNA is working and you can resolve Cisco-capwap-controller.localdomain to

The WLC management ip, I would console into the AP and capture the output and post that info here. Capture the output when you power up the AP. You can see how he AP tries to join.

Yes the console says its actually joining the WLC, but WCS dosent show it. Restarting wcs now

Wait... you mean the WLC not WCS?

No it says its joining the controller but WCS does not see it. I copied the boot up to a file but cant paste or attach on this site

No I cant see the Ap in the "Configure Access Points" section of WCS so that I can configure from there

Are you trying to add the AP onto the floor plan and you don't see the AP name when you choose add?
