Is Cisco Aironet 340 or 350 product compatible with other AP?

If I purchase a Aironet 350 PC-Card will it work with any other Mfg. access point?

The short answer is yes. Some configuration will need to be done though. The rest of the story is below.

You will need to configure it to not use any of the Aironet proprietary enhancements. This is a simple check box under the Aironet Client Utility (ACU). With this configured you will be set, however the SSID configuration of your card will need to match the AP you want to associate with.

You may also have to turn off WEP if the AP does not support the standards based 40-bit encryption or Cisco's 128-bit encryption. WEP encryption is not a requirement of the 802.11b standard, however most manufacturers support the optional 40-bit encryption outlined in the standard. Anything that uses a longer encryption key is not in the standard and may not be compatible.

In my experience the Aironet 340 was not compatible with either the Linksys or Netgear wireless access point. The signal strength fell off when I walked the laptop out of the office and went to poor/none when taking the laptop in the kitchen. Even at a distance of 3 feet the wireless connection periodically dropped. Netgear is aware of the problem with the 340 and I haven't pursued it with Linksys because it is clearly a problem with Cisco.

You had a problem with getting them to play together?? Beleive it or not I have a homenetwork of both 802.3 and 802.11B. The access point, which I built on BSD 4.3; has a Linksys wpc11(generic) card. I am using WICONTROL to manipulate the channel ,and SSID with no WEP. I have a SR7k Vaio 3lb laptop with a Cisco Aironet 340 PCMCIA running RH71, and a Vaio DS 47780 desktop with a netgear M401 pcmcia. Each machine ties back into the AP with no problems, the strange thing is that it works via ad hoc. All participating machines can talk to one another, with or without samba running!
