L3 roaming in wireless LAN

Hi,

I have a customer's environment that use Catalyst 3550 switch at the edge. They are using L3 forwarding. No L2 or spanning tree is running at their environment. Therefore, Mobile IP needs to be implemented to enable L3 roaming instead of L2.

a) Does Catalyst 3550 support Mobile IP? If not, what other alternative can I have?

b) Does Catalyst 4506 support Mobile IP?

c) How does the design of a hotspot? I noticed that hotspot has certain kind of user authentication. It prompts for username and password during startup. Are they using 802.1x, if not are they using application level to authenticate user? Could you please advise what are the items needed to implement a hotspot other a router and an access point?

Thanks for your time and effort.

Regards,

Delon

a)&b)Mobile IP is supported in Cisco 6500 series Switches. It is not supported in Catalyst 3550 .

Hi,

Thanks for your link.

If this is the case, how can I have L3 roaming in my customer's environment? If I could not run mobile IP, what is your recommendations?

Thanks once a gain.

Re: L3 roaming in wireless LAN

Your other option is not make the switch the foreign agent use a router at the site to take care of the mobile IP and the switch for transport
