Macintosh clients prompted for WEP key when there is none.

We have several Mac clients in the same location who cannot connect to our wireless SSID. This SSID has no security enabled (we use a VPN for that), yet these Macintosh clients are prompted for a WEP password when they try to connect.

Windows systems in the same physical location do no have any problems when connecting to the same SSID.

Initially we suspected a problem with the upgrade to OS X 10.5.5, but we then tested with an earlier OS, 10.4.11, and had the same results.

Mac clients in other locations on campus [connecting to APs that are on the very same controller as those in the problem area] do not have this problem.

I don't know where to go next; TAC says it must be an Apple client issue but clients using the exact same OS version elsewhere on campus do not have this problem. How weird is this!

The service set identifier (SSID) identifies the wireless network that you want to access. Range: Up to 32 characters (case sensitive) But make sure that If you leave this parameter blank, your client adapter can associate to any access point on the network that is configured to allow broadcast. If the access points with which you wish to communicate are not configured to allow broadcast SSIDs, the value of this parameter must match the SSID of the access points. Otherwise, you will not be able to access the network.
