New AIR-LAP1142N-A-K9 Insufficient Memory To Boot The Image

I'm hoping someone can help me with this as I just pulled the AP out of the box and haven't received support contracts yet.  I connected the AP to the LAN and added it to my 4402 controller (version 5.2.178.0) with no problems.  Once I set it the mode to H-REAP and it rebooted, it went loopy.  Actually, it boots up, shows a bunch of debug info, then reboots.  The console output is below.  I've tried reimaging (image c1140-rcvk9w8-tar.124-21a.JA2.tar) but still have the same problem.  I checked and although the controller software is old, the AP is supported.  Would this be a hardware issue?

5.2.157/178 and 1140 in H-reap mode = Crash = This was a big blunder with test teams failing to catch this bug.

CSCsx58514    Hreap local switching  makes 1140 reboot continuously

CSCsv67671    AP1140  crash - with IP redirection and various other configs

Here's what I suspect is happening:

1.  You are running CAPWAP/LWAP image.

2.  Your AP must've crashed in the past several times;

3.  After it crashes, the AP will create a crashinfo subdirectories; and

4.  NOW, it continues to crash and continues to create MORE subdirectories until your WAP's flash gets filled up.

This is what is known as a crash-boot-loop.  The only way I can see you fix this is to convert the WAP to autonomous, erase all the crash info file (or better yet, just format the entire WAP using the command "format flash:") and convert the WAP from autonomous to CAPWAP.

Hi,  thanks for the quick response.   I tried converting to autonomous however it is still crashing.  Here is what I tried - rebooted to rommon, did "format flash:" which was successful.  Did "dir flash:" to confirm format.  Set TFTP server IP to 10.0.0.2 and copied c1140-k9w7-tar.124-25d.JA1.tar to TFTP and renamed it c1140-k9w7-tar.default.   Rebooted AP holding mode button and it installed IOS and booted.   It's still stuck in the crash-boot-loop.  Here is the console log from a couple of loops.  One weird thing is that it shows the uptime (near end of log) as 631262959 days.  Any ideas?

New AIR-LAP1142N-A-K9 Insufficient Memory To Boot The Image

I've been doing some more testing.  If I format the flash and reinstall the LWAPP recovery image where the AP can't connect to the WLC, it stays up searching for the controller.  Once it connects and downloads the image from the WLC it starts the crash loop.  I'm going to try updating the code on one of my controllers over the weekend to see if it fixes the issue.  According to the release notes, the AIR-LAP1142N was supported as of 5.2.157 and we're at 5.2.178 so it should work.

Before I upgrade, would there be any reason not to upgrade to the latest code 7.0.220 on my WLC4402?

Hi Salil,

Thanks, that was the issue.  I upgraded a test controller to 7.0.220 and the AP joined and has been running for an hour with no problems. 

Leo, thanks for your help.   I'm now an expert at reimaging APs.
