Some AIR-CAP3502i-e-k9 vo1 no joining network

HI

We've just replaced some 1240 LAPs with 20 x 3502i.

Seem to have a problem, most of the 14 * 3502i have regersted on the network and working, 6 arent connecting and log below.

I've replaced one of the AP with a differnt one, same model and batch and this works.

WISMs on 7.0.98.0

Some AIR-CAP3502i-e-k9 vo1 no joining network

Craig,

The AP that work, what IP subnet are they getting?  This AP is getting 126.30.0.25 /8, and that address space belongs to Japan Softbank BB Corp, at least according to a whois query.

HTH,

Steve

Hi

we're usign that range for internal network.

You really shouldn't use public address ranges internally if you don't own them, you could run into issues with that. That's why you are starting to see recomendations to not use 1.1.1.1 for virtual addresses, that was released to a private firm and may become an issue in the future.

This is something we have inherited, we are currently moving away from it.

You could alwast sniff the DHCP handshake and see whats going on. Just a suggestion.

Worse case use ip forward 5246 UDP.

How are the APs finding the WLC?

According to the log DHCP is not presenting Option 43 to the AP so the AP will not know how to connect to the WLC unless you have the WLC in the same network, broadcast forwarding is setup, or DNS is setup.

Hi

This is what I thought as well, but when I put in another AP of the same make and model in the same switch port, this connects and works.

The 126 range is vlan 1 which all our APs connect to.  But another AP out the the box works.

Cheers

You'll probably need to do some debugs of the capwap sessions on the WLC themselves and see what they are saying.

This technote shows a lot of the debugs to run, pretty much just replace lwapp with capwap:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6366/products_tech_note09186a00808f8599.shtml

The AP obviously doesn't think it's getting the WLC information, I know you said it works with others out of the box but can you provide information on your DHCP server with screen shots of the VCI/Option 43 setup?

Re: Some AIR-CAP3502i-e-k9 vo1 no joining network

HI

Double checked our option 43 is correct, nothing wrong, even our system managers checked.

Attached is a capture of non working.

As say, All the same model AP, some working some not on the same port

Cheers

Craig,

In the workingnot3502p2, the IP address the client gets is DHCP address 10.156.217.143 255.255.255.128 <-- Does not get the Option 43

In the work3500new, the IP address the client gets is DHCP address 126.30.0.172 255.0.0.0 <-- Does get the Option 43

So, there is something different happening between the AP.  In your network under the VLAN the AP get their IP from, do you have the secondary command configured with the other subnet?  In the scope for the 10.156.217.128 subnet, Option 43 is listed there as well?

Steve

Re: Some AIR-CAP3502i-e-k9 vo1 no joining network

HI

Option 43 is set up in all scopes.

What I've just done was put the AP that are not working in to the same vlan as the managment vlan, this worked straight away.

Soon as I drop the switchport back in to the normal vlan its a mix and match wether the new APs join.

Sounds like a problem with DHCP, but then why would some join?

cheers

Craig
