What is available to test for throughput on an Access Point?

I am looking for a product, or software or something that I can test throughput levels on an access point after I site survey a location. Does anyone know of a product? Thanks. David Beaver

If I am not mistaken most access points come with software for you to measure your throughput levels. There is also a software call Netstumbler that I think does something similar. You can check out www.netstumbler.com

Thanks, I think netstumbler will work fine.

I use an FTP server running on a laptop computer which is attached to the access point through a crossover Ethernet cable. I then do FTP 'gets' and 'puts' of a 1MB file from a wireless enabled laptop to the FTP server. The FTP client on the wireless laptop reports the throughput in MBytes per second.

Netstumbler is infact a tool used by 'war drivers' as they have become known, who drive round the neighbourhood with their laptops, orinoco cards and Pringles tin antennae, looking for insecure APs.

The software allows for discovery of the following information of an AP, just by driving passed it:

MAC Address, SSID, Name, Channel, Vendor, Type, whether WEP is configured, various SNR information, and if you couple it with a GPS unit, the LAT and LON where it was discovered...

Disabling broadcast SSID on your AP will prevent it showing up on this software.
