WLAN between LAP1140 and AP1130 (WGB-Mode) unstable

Hi Forum!

we got a WLAN with a WLC5508 (sw.-ver. 7.0.98.0) and a few AP1140. To connect a non-WLAN device to our WLAN we configured an AP1130 (sw.-ver. 12.4(10b)JDA3 to be a workgroup-bridge within our WLAN and attached the non-WLAN device to it's ethernet interface. The connection works in general - we are able to ping the AP1130 and the non-WLAN device behind this WGB-AP.

As soon as we put some load on the WLAN connection - in this case we ping the attached non-WLAN device on fas0, having the load of the term mon vty output on the WLAN connection - the WLAN connection breaks down and the AP associates to a neighboring LWAPP and back and forth.

Sometimes it reassociates 5 or 6 times.

AP1130#ping 10.32.7.34 repeat 10000

Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 10000, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 10.32.7.34, timeout is 2 seconds:

The radio configuration on the WGB is:

WLAN-Associations gives us:

I already:

- changed the station-role to station-role workgroup-bridge universal (using the non-WLAN devices MAC)

- enabled infrastructure-client in interface-configuration mode

- disabled the aironet-extensions (no dot11 extension aironet)

- changed the rates/speed

But nothing helped. Can anybody give me a hint what needs to be done to get more stability into this connection?

Or can anybody explain what this message means?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Have you tried different IOS versions? I would try GD versions JA3 or JDA3 if you aren't already running one of those two.

Re: WLAN between LAP1140 and AP1130 (WGB-Mode) unstable

Hi Elliot,

yes, i tried different versions, but without any effect. I changed the radio, today. I have been using the 2,4GHz radio on the WGB, before. Now, using the 5GHz radio the connection seems to be stable, even under load. Our Cisco support partner recommended to add the command "no mobile station" to the radio config.

He said this would deactivate the background channel scanning and should add stability to the wlan connection. But i haven't tried that, yet.

The WLC keeps posting the mentioned message, serveral times per second.

Re: WLAN between LAP1140 and AP1130 (WGB-Mode) unstable

Hi Daniel,

are you still getting the same issue?

Im getting the same message "%APF-6-PROC_DOT11_MAC_MGMT_DATA_FAILED" and Im using the same sw version.

Were you able to found out something regarding this issue?

Best regards,

Norberto

Re: WLAN between LAP1140 and AP1130 (WGB-Mode) unstable

Hi Norberto,

no, i haven't found any informations regarding that message, yet. But i forwarded all informations to our Cisco support partner, today. And i hope they can provide informations regarding that message. Our WLC posts multiple messages every second.

Do you use a similar setup? WLC and LWAPPs with APs in WGB-Mode attached?

Re: WLAN between LAP1140 and AP1130 (WGB-Mode) unstable

Running a WLC4402 (SW 7.0.98.0) with 35 x LAP1252 APs and I am still seeing this message every few seconds as well.  So far I haven't been able to determine the cause or resolution for this message.

APF-6-PROC_DOT11_MAC_MGMT_DATA_FAILED: apf_80211.c:7138 Could not Process 802.11 MAC mgmt Data. Invalid toDs/fromDs bit set - packet ignored.

Re: WLAN between LAP1140 and AP1130 (WGB-Mode) unstable

Has this been resolved?  I'm getting a ton of these "errors" in my syslog.  The only thing I could find on Cisco's site was a reference stating that it would be fixed in later releases.  I'm using 7.0.98.205 on a 4402.

Re: WLAN between LAP1140 and AP1130 (WGB-Mode) unstable

Hmmm.. TAC would say that it is not supported due to different platforms in use.

However... I would recommend you using same units on both sides with same IOS version.

Even running same units but with different IOS version is not recommended and not supported. Unexpected behaviors could appear.

just my 2 cents..
